A recent Fox News poll has shown that Republicans are less convinced than Democrats that artificial intelligence systems need to be regulated by the federal government. This is becoming an increasingly important issue, which could get hung up in politics as it advances in Washington.
While 71% of Republicans believe that federal regulation of AI is either “very” or “somewhat” important, 82% of Democrats share the same view. The poll found that 76% of respondents saw some importance to federal regulation, but there was a noticeable gap between the two parties.
When asked about their confidence level that the government could “properly regulate” AI, just 31% of Republicans responded “a great deal” or “some,” compared to 50% of Democrats. This skepticism grew even wider when comparing Biden and Trump voters, with just 28% of Trump supporters feeling any confidence in the government on AI compared to 51% of Biden supporters.
Overall, voters are skeptical that elected leaders are up to the task of placing appropriate limits on this new tech, which probably says something about opinion on the tech and opinion on our leaders.
