In recent years, Republican governors have taken bold action to address the border crisis and send a message to the federal government about the importance of secure borders. These governors have bussed thousands of immigrants to sanctuary cities, including Washington D.C., in an effort to highlight the dire need for immigration reform.
Unfortunately, many Democrats, including D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, have criticized this effort as “inhumane” and claimed that the city does not have the capacity to handle the influx of immigrants. This is simply not true.
Acc. to Washington Examiner, Washington D.C. is a sanctuary city and should be expected to take in and assist immigrants, just like any other city that claims to support and protect them. The problem is not with the immigrants themselves, but with the lack of resources and infrastructure in place to support them.
This is why it is so important for the federal government to step in and provide the necessary support to these cities. The recently passed omnibus funding bill transferred $800 million to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the creation of a new DHS grant program, the Shelter and Services Program. This program will support cities facing an influx of migrants, but it is clear that more must be done.
Many Democrats, including Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, have called for the Congress to fix the broken immigration system. However, it is not just the responsibility of the legislative branch to address this crisis. The executive branch must also take action to secure the border and ensure that the flow of illegal immigration is stemmed.
Despite objections from some in the community, Republican governors are taking the lead and making sure that these immigrants are not left behind. They are providing resources and support to these migrants, despite the challenges and obstacles they face. This is a testament to the compassionate and determined spirit of the Republican Party.
It is time for the Democrats to stop playing politics and join Republicans in finding a solution to this crisis. The well-being and safety of these migrants, and the citizens of our country, should be the top priority. We must work together to fix our broken immigration system and secure our borders.
