In a startling development, Special Counsel Jack Smith has obtained former President Trump’s direct messages on the social media platform once known as Twitter. The company’s efforts to block access were in vain, as unsealed court filings show that Smith’s team obtained not only the messages but also location data and draft tweets.
The company, now named X Corp., attempted to block and delay the effort, leading to a contempt of court ruling and a $350,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell’s frustration with the company’s legal team was evident in the transcripts from the courtroom.
The social media giant was forced to hand over an extensive list of data related to Trump’s account, including all tweets “”created, drafted, favorited/liked, or retweeted.”” The handover also included searches on the platform surrounding the 2020 election, devices used to log into the account, IP addresses, and associated accounts.
This development is part of the third criminal indictment against Trump, related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The company’s failed attempt to block access raises serious questions about its intentions and its relationship with the former president.
