A recent viral clip showing Vice President Kamala Harris heaping praise on former Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby has left many Republican voters stunned as Mosby faces charges of fraud and perjury.
Mosby is accused of falsely claiming COVID-19-related financial hardship to withdraw $90,000 from her retirement accounts, then using those funds to place down payments on two vacation properties in Florida.
She’s also accused of lying on mortgage applications by failing to disclose unpaid federal taxes. Her entire defense team quit last month, further delaying her federal trial. The resurfacing of the 2018 video of Harris endorsing Mosby has added fuel to the fire, given the current situation.
In the video, Harris is seen speaking at a campaign rally for Mosby on the day of the Democratic primary election for Baltimore state’s attorney.
Harris talks about the need to reform the criminal justice system, and how Mosby is the right person for the job. She further says that Mosby will not fail and that people need to shout about what they need to do to bring about changes in the criminal justice system. Harris’s endorsement of Mosby has left many Republican voters outraged and questioning the judgment of the Vice President.
Mosby has served two high-profile terms as State’s Attorney, which included an attempt to prosecute multiple officers in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died in police custody.
As State’s Attorney, Mosby also controversially directed her office to stop prosecuting quality-of-life crimes such as drug possession and prostitution at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, arguing that it was necessary to reduce the chance of outbreaks in jails and prisons.
Her trial is now slated to begin in November, with jury selection starting on October 31. The Vice President’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
Republican voters need to pay attention to this situation, as it highlights the serious flaws in the current political system. Mosby’s case is a clear example of how politicians can abuse their power and manipulate the system for personal gain. We need leaders who are accountable and transparent, not those who are willing to lie and cheat to get ahead.
